Chapter 3: New Friends New Foes: ShowHide

Drawn by Devapein

"The basis of shame is not some mistake of ours, but that this humiliation is seen by everyone."
-Milan Kundera

I found myself on a lush green meadow. It reached as far as my eye could see, until it touched the cloudless sky on the horizon. In the distance I recognized an huge oak. I ran towards it, but it did not get closer, no matter how fast I ran, it always remained at the same size on the horizon still. So I stopped, and looked around, to my left there was a small lake, so clean that one could see to its bottom. I looked into my reflection, and saw my face. It was unharmed. I drank something, taking a few sips of this deliciously fresh water in, as I closed my eyes, and enjoyed the peace for a few moments. But then, suddenly, I noticed some warmth trickling down my muzzle. I didn't pay attention to it, as I continued to drink. But suddenly it tasted bitter. Astonished, I casted up my eyes, and saw some blood running down the back of my muzzle, diving into the water, and forming a fine, fibrous drawing on its surface. It twisted and was beautiful. Then the picture sank below the surface of the water, and I realized my reflection again, into which I saw.
Suddenly my head was knocked to the side as if someone had hit it. But there was nothing. No one there. Only my reflection. More blood dripped from my muzzle, but it did not hurt. Again my head was beaten aside, and even more blood flowed off my face. Droplet-wise it first struck the water surface powerfully, and sank then into the depths of the lake. I remained unusually calm, as it still didn't hurt at all, and kept watching my image. Slowly I could observe the deep, red seams running along my chaps, across the back of my muzzle, and mirrored on the other side of my muzzle. The whole thing continued on the side of my face, down towards my chest. Terrified, I opened my mouth, as there was more and more blood, tainting the water underneath me. Long strings drew from my mouth to the water surface. I suddenly got no air, as if something were tying up my throat, as if I were trapped in one of those things humans were setting up for the hunt. Shining wires, we used to call them. I fell to the ground, and saw a piece of wood sticking out of the ground beside me with something shining, which led to my neck. It was getting narrower, I struggled, and wriggled, but the more I moved, the tighter it became around my throat. I felt like my head was about to burst due to overpressure at every moment, and looking out of the corner of my eye I saw dense, dark clouds shoving before the sun, and me sinking in the shadows of theirs.

I startled, opening my eyes and screeched. "By Frith ..." I whispered softly, still wildly panting for breath, from this nightmare. I did need a few moments to calm down, and then noticed, that I still have to be here, in Efrafa. I laid my head on my paws and put on my ears in fear, as I saw the dried blood on the ground in front of me. I swallowed hardly once. I wondered what is to happen next. Why only couldn't I remember what happened? Where I came from? These questions drove me into madness, especially what happened, if I was not able to answer them. Would I be killed? A giant growling of my stomach reached my ears. I was ravenous, I felt like I was eaten inside, as if my stomach would already begin to digest itself. How long have I been unconscious? How long have I not eaten anything? I decided to get up, and rose myself. I looked around again and saw how I must have slept in the pit at the wall, into which this Hawk had pushed and attacked me a few times. I growled deeply into myself, as I began to feel hatred for him. At the same time, however, there was also a bit of fear, as he seemed to be stronger than me. I brushed my muzzle with my left front paw once, and noticed that my wounds must have been treated. As I looked down at myself, I saw, that the wound on my chest has been cleansed and was already slightly closed. Was I helped? Very strange.

Again my stomach grumbled, this time even more violently than before. I went to the exit of my burrow, but stopped right in front of the passageway and saw two guards. They were others, as before, who have welcomed me here so kindly. I caughed slightly: "I-I'm hungry. May I go up, for Silflay, please?" I tried, as far as I could, not sounding too timid, so I won't get pushed around again. The Owslas turned to me. One confirmed with an harsh "come along!", and a nod to follow them. I went after them the long runs, and was once more amazed how long the way was, how far I was brought into the underground. With every metre the air finally got better, so I realized. Apparently, I already got used to the musty stench. We left the corridor and came along to the side of the big hall, where I was first interrogated, and treaded the open. I breathed in as deep as my lungs allowed me to. This fresh, clean air, and the sun rays that hit on my fur, what a blessing. We climbed the slope, where the warren was located at, and arrived on a meadow. The two guards positioned only slightly away from me. "Hurry up, you've got until Ni-Frith, you aren't due to more, Prisoner Leo", the dark brown buck explained, as I only nodded.

I gorged myself as much as I could, without paying too much attention to my environment. Too big was the fear, not to know when there was something to eat again. Hopefully, they wouldn't refuse me the food as well, if nothing should help. And I had such an apprehension, that I won't remember anything more, if I haven't done so far yet. During Silflay I was able to observe a group of rabbits, which were eating as well. They were encircled by some much sturdier rabbits and where propelled further more on to the meadow after a while. I hopped forth a bit, to see more without attracting the attention of my guards. Slowly I looked over the rabbits. They appeared partly weak, malnourished, or simply demotivated. I felt so sorry for them. I just didn't understand this whole thing. As my eyes poised at the group, I saw three rabbits, perching together, and one of them looked back at me, sizing me up inquisitively, and it seemed to talk to the other two. Curiously, I rose my ears, as the warmth of the sun disappeared for a moment, for it was covered by a cloud. The rabbit talked to one of the guards, but I couldn't hear anything, they were too far away. The Guard was nodding, and the rabbit came directly towards me, with slow, careful steps. It was a Marli, snow-white fur, and black paws. She gave me a smile, and I instinctively returned it. The first friendly gesture I was experiencing here at all. Suddenly, one of my guards obstructed her, but before he could say anything, the Marli just waved her paw calmingly, saying, "It's all right, I spoke to the Owsla. I only want to take a look for him, Sir." The soldier just nodded, giving her way, a little humming. Visibly displeased. The white Marli came up to me with a friendly smile. "Hello you, I'm Dawn, we do not know each other yet", she introduced herself. Her voice sounded warm and friendly. I liked to hear it. "I am-", I swallowed slightly, voice breaking in, "Leo, my name is Leo. Please excuse me, I have not eaten for days, at least I think so." I gently chuckled the latter, despite this strange situation. "Leo", she smiled even friendlier, "I am glad to meet you." "I know", she continued, "you were unconscious for two days! How do you feel now?", she asked me with an anxiety in the voice, that puzzled me. "Two days? Oh dear..." I looked down at the ground for a moment, "Quite well so far, somebody must have cleaned my wounds and taken care of them after this... treatment. Wait!", I stopped myself, "Whence you know that?" "I was", she said, poking my nose with her paw, "I've cleansed your wounds and taken care of you, Leo. One of the Owsla asked me, for I'm relatively versed in these things. He said you'd have to get back on your paws as soon as possible." There was a certain anxiety in her voice. She was that? The white spot that was moving toward me, I thought I was already dreaming.

"I'm so sorry", she complemented, trying to give me a smile. "It's okay", I put one of my paws on her shoulder, and clothed my face with a smile that covered up my fear of the future, "I do not quite understand this whole thing, tho. But thank you, it's really nice of you." She returned smiling, seemed to blush even a bit. "Well, may I take a look at them again?" She got up quickly, pointing me with her paw to rise. I sat up on my hind legs, and she looked at my wounds, carefully stroking my chest with her fore paw, which apparently had already healed well to me. When she examined my muzzle, I briefly shrank back my face, as it suddenly ached, but calmed down again quickly. "Excuse me, I", she stammered, but I interrupted her immediately. "No reason for it, I was only frightened." I let my ears hang low, and I could only utter softly, "The memory just came back a moment." She nodded. "Well, this looks quite good so far, Leo. In a few days the whole thing should be well again." She clapped me on the shoulders. I smiled contentedly, sighing a little even. At least something good. "Even so I fear that new ones will emerge", I admitted with concern. "May I ask you who questioned you, Leo?", she asked, looking at me. Again I thought of that scene down there, in the burrow, and put on my ears, "Hawk," I let loose short of the ground. She swallowed once heavily, I could clearly recognize her reaction, that he was known to her. "I understand", she meant, "I'm so sorry. What exactly do they want from you? In the mark, where we are lodged, they speak of a new one. You." She poked me once. "Yes, that'll probably be me", I said, "The gray buck here in front of you. They want to know where I come from, they talked about outsiders. This Hawk said I'd surely belong to an warren called Watership Down. But the problem is, what I have already told to everyone here, even at my first interrogation, down below at General Woundwort: I do not know." Depressed, I dropped my gaze to the ground and scratched with the paw through the grass. It felt dry. "I know nothing at all anymore, except for my name. I woke up on a meadow, near a river, in the forest here, and was captured hither. Just no one wants to believe me."

There was a moment of awkward silence, when I suddenly felt her paw under my chin, as she lifted my gaze, making me look into her eyes, with an heart-warming smile. "Your voice, it sounds true. - I believe you", her voice sounded very soft, "that has to be incredibly hard for you. Perhaps you have survived an attack by an Elil. And then having to be here, at Efrafa - at that time. You know, we had some visitors here some time ago, Hazel and Fiver they were called. They probably created some kind of unrest and were the only rabbits that escaped from here again. Altogether this incited the situation kinda, in which you fell unfortunately." Suddenly she hugged me and frightened I lifted my ears, but I reciprocated, her smell arousing somehow some kind of confidentialness in me. "I hope it'll get better soon.", she pressed me closer to her, "I believe you, Leo. And I already like you somehow." Slowly she loosened the embrace and looked at me. "It's so good to talk," I said, and smiled at her. "It's good to see someone new here around", she replied, laughing softly. "You're not alone", she whispered, looking out for the guards. "Look", she bent her head slightly down, revealing her neck. She also had a scratch, just like me, when they gave me the sign of Hraffla. But hers was older, almost already fused again. "I'm afraid, it'll be renewed soon", she lifted her head back up to me and looked at me. "An escape attempt, a very short one", she once glanced at the group of rabbits from which she had just approached, "We had tried to, but it was not to be, I guess." I looked over the group, the two rabbits seemed to watch us, while they were eating, and talking to each other, as it seemed to me. "Primrose, and the brown buck with the funny hairstyle is Blackavar. I hope they can get to know you soon as well. You will like them. - And friends can always be handy." "I would be very happy too, to meet further rabbits", I gave her a smile, and at this moment I was so pleased about this acquaintance. A glimmer of hope, if this nightmare should end. "Most of those who wear this mark like we do are unfortunately shunned, they are afraid to be suspected as well, and run the risk of punishment. At least, as long as Owsla and Officers are nearby", she shrugged, "I can understand, still, it's annoying and ever so depressing."

"Silflay ending! Everyone below the earth again!" The voice of an Owsla of the rear group echoed over the meadow. Dawn looked once there, and immediately fell on her fore paws, to run off: "You heard it, I hope we'll meet again, Leo. I wish you luck! Stay strong!" I could see her still spurting over the meadow as she didn't seem to no longer hear my quiet, "Goodby." "The same applies to you", the black buck of my guards muttered at me, and I dropped to my forelegs as fast as I can, following the two guards, without thinking too much, back in my burrow.

I lied down at the cold wall of my lair and looked out to the exit, as I rested my head on my front paws. How was it supposed to go on? Would there be other interrogations? How can I withstand them, if they get worse? I wish I had the answers ready, that would bring me peace from all this horror. I closed my eyes and tried to dream myself to a more beautiful place, while I finally fell asleep slowly, weakened by the exertions.

When I woke up, nothing's changed. I opened my eyes and lied in the same cave in which I had fallen asleep. "Too bad. Well, at least no nightmare", I said softly to myself and sat myself up. I moistened my front paws some with my tongue, taking one of my ears between them, and started cleaning myself. Albeit it appeared obscure to me, it seemed to awake certain normality in me to clean myself. It sort of dispelled the fear, of that, what was about to come, while doing something everyday. When I was done, I became hungry again, and after all the cleaning I got a terrible thirst. My throat was dust-dry. Carefully I tapped to the exit of my burrow again, cleared my throat and asked, if I could go to Silflay, and drink something. These were other guards again. Two huge bucks, compared to me, the one cream-colored, the other in a dark grey tone, while his chest was white as snow. The dark gray turned to me, looked at his colleague questioningly, but without getting an answer from him, he nodded a little later, and they led me back to the meadow. Frith shined bright and warm over the warren, the huge toppled oak throwed an almost threatening shadow over the whole area. No wind, as if time stood still for a moment, surrendering to the peace that was lasting for this moment. This time, no rabbits were seen. A little disappointed, they led me off the meadow to the bank of the river, which we had crossed over the bridge at my arrival. Hasty I took some sips. The air was so clear, and fresh. Looking up in the sky, I could see that it seemed to be early in the morning. I never wanted to go down into this cave again.

After a few more sips, I tapped two steps into the water and looked down into my reflection. The sight reminded me of my dream. Was this real? All of this here? I clearly felt the nippy wet through my fur, how it cooled my paws, and the gritty earth beneath my paws felt quite pleasant. I looked into the distorted face of a rabbit, that had been defiled to its blood, having no hope and facing a gloomy future. I sighed and looked up. On my left, I saw the bridge we once came over. I took note, when I saw a group of rabbits crossing it. They scurried over the meadow, and came directly towards us, when they spotted me. The one which seemed to lead the group, had a quite peculiar appearance. Dark fur, and a beard like that of a goat. I catched myself, as I had to chuckle at his look. "Hey, you there", the rabbit's voice croaked, as they approached to us, "Aren't you the new one they've picked up recently?" I just nodded cautiously, not breathing any word, as in the emphasis of his question something menacing resonated. "If you didn't want to disclose to good old Hawk, where you came from, you surely would like to share it with me, don't you? My friend?", he grinned at me strangely sly, and came close to me, almost unpleasantly close. "I'm really sorry, but as I've already had to say to Hawk, I don't know." I lowered my head and hoped, that he'd just go away again. I didn't like this. "Yes, be so good," he grinned at me, as I raised my eyes again, "The general will be good to us. Come on, hold him!", he ordered two of the Owsla who came with him, and before I knew what was happening, they had encircled me to the left and to the right, and took hold of me under my front legs, so I could barely move. "Let me, please! I have nothing more to say to you!" I growled deeply, trying to pull myself out of their embrace, but I failed. The two Owsla were too strong. The black buck paced slowly into the water and stopped in front of me. Heavily he straightened himself and looked down at me, where I was still standing on all fours. "Tell me, where is your warren, stranger?" he said with a serious voice and a nasty grin on his lips. I just shook my head. I was fed up with the questions. "Tell me", he hissed loudly, and I was only able to feel his fore paws pushing my head down and dipping it into the water. With fear I screamed my whole air out of my lungs, while I was shrieking wildly, but I could not get any hold with the hind legs. The ground was too wet, and I slid deeper into the water, as I felt the weight of the buck on my head. Madly I tried to free my head by wild twitching, but failed. Suddenly he let me go and I rose my head aloft. Dumb with terror I inhaled deeply and fought for air. A burst of Adrenaline shot into my bloodstream and my heart was racing. "By Frith ..." I whispered quietly. Like long strings, limply my fur hang down at my body. I blinked frenziedly to get the water out of my eyes. "Your warren, stranger?", the black buck asked. I glanced up to him, huffing despicably the rest of the water out of my nose, "I don't know it, so believe me!" He shrugged and saw at the rest of the Owsla, who were standing around us. "Still looks rather thirsty to me, poor boy", he laughed maliciously, pressing my head back under the surface of the water. This time I held my breath, as it didn't surprise me completely, like before. I tried to slide away with my head under his fore paws, by trashing around ferociously, but it just didn't work. "Captain Vervain, that's enough!" I perceived a blurred, strange voice. The buck took his paws off my head and I could finally emerge again, immediately panting for air like mad. A brown rabbit has joined up to our group. "Campion, what's the point of that? The stranger wants to break his silence at any moment", said the goatee. "For real? It looked more like you were about to kill him, Vervain", he replied distantly. His appearance was very composed and calm, unlike his counterpart, who seemed very upset about his intervention. "Perhaps you better should leave that up to Hawk, as the responsibility for this was allotted to him, or am I wrong, Vervain?", Campion asked, with earnestness. Vervain just grumbled, glanced at me once. Then he nodded, whereupon he set off with the group with which he came, and disappeared. Immediately, as I was able to move again, I stepped out of the water, and coughed a few times violently.

"Is everything all right?" Campion asked me, looking at me, after I calmed down. I just quickly nodded at that. He looked over me urgently, and I couldn't help seeing subconscious compassion for me in his facial expression. Quickly, however, it disappeared from his mimic. He muttered once, when he looked at the two Owsla, who were accompanying me. "I hope this whole thing will be done soon", he said gravely, then disappeared again as well. The guards now took me back to the meadow. "Hurry up, half of your time is already over, by your lagging", the dark gray snubbed at me. While I was nibbling at the meadow, I realized a group of rabbits that must have been brought up meanwhile. I saw Dawn in the distance, and a smile flits over my lips, disappearing immediately again, for I saw two solid bucks harassing her. One was standing behind her and held her tight, while the other held her head pinned down to the ground with his front paws, and he seemed to whisper something in her ear. I could feel slowly the boiling rage inside of me, I got hot, and gnashed my teeth, slightly growling throaty into myself. What a hellhole was that here, where I was trapped? Rabbits should not deal with each other like that! I once looked after my guards, and run off. "Stop that", I yelled out of the deepest of my throat. As fast as my legs carried me, I ran towards the group without much thinking. "Leo, don't!" I still heard Dawn's voice, as I ran into the buck, who was holding her head to the ground, ramming him from his runs, kicking after the other immediately, while leaning on my fore-legs, so that he stepped away from her. She crouched huddling, slightly trembling with fear. I didn't even get to say anything to her, as someone already grabbed my neck with his teeth. I screamed, and was slung away. I hit massively on my back and shook my head briefly, kind of confused. Immediately, the two bucks, from whom I fled, stood above me, and pressed me with their whole weight into the dirt. They let me feel their claws, as they pinned me with their front paws to the ground. "Seems to me, as if you're healthy enough for another questioning", the cream colored growled at me, and hit me in the face once. "Under the earth with you, scabby Hraffla", he cursed further. Directly I was roughly hauled to a run under the ground, being shooed through the corridors into my burrow back again. I didn't regret. I just hoped Dawn wouldn't get any more trouble, thanks to my attack. I crouched down in my burrow and laid down, while looking grimly at the exit. Waiting for what was about to follow now.

Unfortunately, we have a maximum of post length, therefor I can't just add the third chapter at the beginning of this thread, like I always did. >.< If there might be a way, just let me know, as I preferred it a lot this way, to keep an overview. x3

Anyways, thank you all so much for your kind words, sorry for saying this so late, but your words keep motivating me so much! :bigwig3
Chipster, yep, as a Councillor I definitely will put some more focus on him, later in the story. :fiver

WHAT THE HELL LEO x_x

It took me an hour to read Chapter 2 and the comments and I have to say this:
"HOLY ***, THAT HAWK IS CRAZY, WHAT THE HELL DOES IT HAPPEN TO?" :bigwig

In terms of torture humans are worse, but for standards of the animal world this is something inconceivable. Only a rabbit with such a twisted mind could do so much damage.
Poor bunny Leo, no animal deserves so much punishment. Vervain is an angel compared to the ruthless Hawk, but sooner or later everyone knows Inle's black rabbit in its darkest facet, the more evil they are.

Good and brutal Leo story. At the moment I could not read the chapter 3 by the image of the hanged rabbit X_X

And I must remark that I loved these words quite a lot:

"There are words that serve the purpose of hiding thoughts. You, my dear Leo, are using those words." Hawk

"Killing me will not change the truth, you damn bugger! It is and remains the truth! I-do-not-know it!" Leo

"Frith was not here today." Hawk

I may use them in my own writings with permission from Leo ^^
I love Watership Down!

Everything is fine =) (?)

Unfortunately, the character limit per post is imposed by Zetaboards and cannot be changed. I guess you could put a direct link to the post containing chapter 3, in the first post.

The image is quite disturbing...

About the chapter itself, it's well-written. The description of Leo's dream is well-done, and you make it look very realistic.

A large part of the rest of the chapter involves the interaction between Leo and Dawn. The character of Dawn so far is really interesting, I recognize her from your blog entry. The entire conversation is well-written. And it's funny how you mention Blackavar's crazy hairstyle.

Soon afterwards, you get another torture scene, this time performed by Vervain. This is well-written, and both Campion and Vervain seem to behave in-character.

I'm sure the final scene, in which Leo attacks the guards who were bullying Dawn, will only cause him more problems...

I'll be looking forward to the next chapter.

:fiver3 Dang, I really do need to start catching up on your Fanfic, my dear Leo-rah. Seeing these great reviews from your chapters is making wonder what I'm missing out. I'll need to take care of that. My next post here in this thread will be a review, hopefully. :silverweed Wish me luck. ;) Hugs

Thank you all so much for your kind comments, my dear friends! :bigwig3
Sorry for taking me so long to get to them! >.<

:fiver3 Dang, I really do need to start catching up on your Fanfic, my dear Leo-rah. Seeing these great reviews from your chapters is making wonder what I'm missing out. I'll need to take care of that. My next post here in this thread will be a review, hopefully. :silverweed Wish me luck. ;) Hugs

Heh! *tackle-hugs* It's alright, take all the time you need, my dear friend. ^_^ But I'm glad a spark of curiosity might have been lit yet! :buttercup Hopefully I will answer expectations. *salutes* :3 :red

And it's funny how you mention Blackavar's crazy hairstyle.[...]

Oh, that's why. Thank you very much for explaining, and your advice! I'll immediately implement it, as this is the best opportunity, I might have, to keep an overview of all chapters in the thread. Thank you a lot, Chipster! :)

I'm sorry, but also glad at the same time, the image aroused such a feeling, to describe the dream in a surreal, and horrific kind, at the same time.

Thank you very much for your kind words! :bigwig3 Yeah, with these very short scenes in my blog, I like to describe little scenes, I maybe won't implement within the main story, to have them completely detached, but still written... somewhere else. :)
Haha, yeah, Blackavar, and his crazy haircut. Although I also don't like it very much, I just had to have him like this, as I love the series the most, so why not mentioning it kinda sarcastically. *chuckles*

You have no idea, how lucky I am to hear, you think Vervain and Campion behave in-character. This means a lot to me, as, especially Campion, is such a hard one to make him act just like in the series. Loyal, but still willing to do his best to help.

I'm also afraid, Leo's deed wasn't very clever, but let's see, where this will all end. *rubs his paws with excitement*
Thank you! X3

WHAT THE HELL LEO x_x

It took me an hour to read Chapter 2 and the comments and I have to say this:
"HOLY ***, THAT HAWK IS CRAZY, WHAT THE HELL DOES IT HAPPEN TO?" :bigwig
[...]

Hrhrhr, I like it dark and drama-wise, have I ever said this? xP *chuckles* Hawk's quite a darling, isn't he?
I'm glad you like it, tho it is so brutal. But Efrafa isn't a peaceful place, isn't it? ^_^
Don't be too harsh on him, there might be more than this shadow that is acting as Woundwort's Officer. But we will see. x3 *nudges playfully*

Also I'm sorry here as well, that the image was terrifying you, but I thought it was the best, to describe Leo's thoughts, he was having in this chapter. To anticipate a bit, with chapter 5/6, there will be a big turn. :bigwig3

Oh, of course you can, dear! It couldn't mean more, if my words are capable of inspiring you here and there, as well! (tho, the first quote isn't from me, at least I think so, might have read it somewhere else yet, but I'm rather unsure) If you don't mind, let me know, when/where you did use them. I'd love to read it as well! ^_^

The next chapter should be up on the next weekend! :woundwort3

I could read the third chapter, now I understand the metaphor of drawing. The nightmare with the bright wires, that means that later they will encounter this dangerous trap.
At least Leo has a little ray of hope inside this hell of torture and slaves of rabbit dignity. Marly seems to be a good-hearted bunny who cares about her patient. I hope no more bad things happen to her.
Vervain and Hawk are monsters. They should be like Campion, he's a strong and honorable rabbit, but no. :campion

Now Leo is again waiting for his interrogation. I do not think he is intimidated as before, but I hope he does not have worse tortures.

There is only one thing that puzzles me and it is not dreams ...

This story is based on the events of the series Watership DOwn true?
Only that would explain the reason why there are still Primrose and Blackavar, even prisoners. :blackavar

From Hazel and Fiver's incurrence. HAHAHAHAH very good memories of that episode. :hazel

Sorry for the double post. It seems that same day and time we posted at the same lapse and did not see your message. Now I answer.
-------------
You're right that everything has to be dramatic and dark, to be more interesting. You are free to do so.
It just expressed how evil some creatures like Hawk could be. And the stories are not interesting, if there is tension, drama and danger. It's what readers are looking for ... also here are rabbits X3

And do not worry about me, I'm just being melodramatic. XD
Follow as your heart thinks it interesting .. :hazel2

Of course I'll let you know, if I get to use those highly valued phrases. I assure.
We wait for the next chapter. I hope Hawk is not so bad :irony

Here's the fourth Chapter. *wipes off his sweat* Phew, I still need too long to translate them. :hannah4 I really hope it's readable - let me know your thoughts! One hint for the next chapter: A turning point is approaching! :strawberry2

Chapter 4: Cruel Togetherness: ShowHide

Drawn by Devapein

"He who fights with monsters should be careful lest he thereby become a monster."
-Friedrich Nietzsche

I didn't know how long I've been staring at my two paws in front of me, as I laid in my burrow, with the cold wall in my back. I imagined a nicer place I could be right now. Just anywhere. Basically I liked this place, which I had dreamed of, even if this dream quickly turned into a bloody nightmare. Was it possibly a memory? Of a known place? Unfortunately, none cowslips rang, whether it was true, or just a dream.

I had put my head on my fore paws, as I lifted my gaze slightly, suddenly noticing a pair of black-brown paws in the entrance of my burrow. Deperessed, I lowered the eyelids for a moment, as I could already imagine whom this pair of paws belonged to, even if for a second the desire flared up, they would not.
I rose my eyes - they belonged to Hawk. Heavily I breathed deeply in and out once, trying to calm myself, and sat up on my back legs, looking at him with a serious expression. He seemed calm, looked at me intently, his eyes kind of fixed on me. I intended to not say anything. This time I wouldn't yield. "Stay strong", Dawn's voice clung again in my head.

"Intimate togetherness it appears, huh?" He grinned and stroke the debris with the claws of his right front paw, on the wall of the entrance, in which he still stood. I swallowed, and tried not to admit that I was afraid, even though his appearance alone was already intimidating enough for me. "Leo, Leo, Leo", he began, with a disappointing undertone, "attack on two serving Owsla, if you weren't already a prisoner, you could be accused of an escape attempt." He shook his head and then looked at me more sternly, but I kept a straight face. "What are we just supposed to do with you?", he came up to me, and I tried not to fall back, nor to fall for an attacking pose, that's the way I tried to defy him. "They hassled a rabbit, I just wanted to help", I tried to justify myself, as the brown-and-black buck pricked up his ears, and stood still. "Help?" He repeated, "The two were only taking what is theirs, Leo. They are Owsla. You should better get used to the rules here, little gray. Whoever is in the Owsla has the claim to every doe in the mark, to every rabbit that is under him. You're one of those, too, Leo." He grinned at me, as I unconsciously set back my ears, but I quickly rose them again, after I noticed it. They easily took them just because? I couldn't really grasp it. I stroke with one paw around my neck, as it pushed a lump into my throat, what Dawn could have gone through. "A beautiful neck", Hawk's deep, growling voice sounded, and I immediately put my paw back down on the floor. With slow steps he came up to me again, yet I didn't move an inch from the spot, if he'd even just try to hurt me, I will fight back. He sat down on his haunches in front of me, and we were head to head. As he brushed his claws once around my neck, I only closed my eyes and swallowed hard. I had to pull myself together, not to fall into trembling, not to grow panic, and to remain as helpless as I was at the first encounter with him.

"The little girl got you back on your paws quite well, huh? So fast, you enjoyed our last conversation, eh?", he asked, as he stroked a little more tightly around my neck with one of his claws, "You probably missed me?" I opened my eyes and saw how his gaze was fixed at his paw, and my neck. "I have nothing more to say to you", I tried to respond determined, but I couldn't refuse a slight trembling in my voice. His gaze rose, and we looked us straight into the eyes. Instinctively, I saw away, and went on, "As I already told you, and to this Vervain, I do not know where I come from. And I ask you one last time, just leave me alone - Please." "Vervain...", he murmured, lost in thought. "Leo, it will only get worse, if you won't give us what we want from you." He suddenly rammed his front paws left and right against the wall in my back, and I fell instinctively against it, slipping down a bit, so that he stood slightly bent over me. "At first there will be no more pass, we won't grant you any more sleep, also hunger drives out a lot of information, and if your pride pushes you further, it will bring you straight into the darkness of the Black Hole. All this is something I really don't wish many rabbits, Leo, but if you continue to try my patience, this desire could quickly change into the positive." The Black Hole? What was that supposed to be? Again, my breathing accelerated, and the sheer fear creeped up, as the memory returned, how I paralyzed lost the control of my body, and squirmed myself in front of him in the dirt. "Please...", I just whispered softly. "What?", he replied. "Please, just leave me alone, I do everything within my power, but it doesn't help. I cannot remember."
"Well, perhaps my power will help you!", his voice sounded so cold and menacing, as fear was rising increasingly again. He gently drove with his claws over the side of my face, which was turned towards him, from the temple down to my chin, and on the other side up again. At any moment, I was expecting him to strike again, but he seemed to be pausing. Cautiously I turned my gaze back at him, and looked him in the eyes. His claws and his gaze remained on my cheek. Suddenly I noticed how he pushed harder, and it started to sting lightly. I ignored my fear, overcame this paralyzed state in myself, and hit his paw away with my right fore paw, kicking with my hind leg against his, so he lost his balance, and landed on me. As he fell upon me, I placed my other hind leg on his stomach, and kicked him off with all my strength. I immediately jumped on all fours and snarled scornfully at him out of the deepest of my throat. "You won't hurt me anymore, Hawk, I won't let this happen!"

He heavily hit the ground with his back, but as fast as I was, he stood on all fours yet again, and grinned at me with a mean expression in his eyes. "Impressive", he licked around his muzzle once, "You've been a member of the Owsla? This trick is familiar to me." He was right, strange, it came like a reaction, these movements, as if I had learned them. Have I been an Owsla? If I only knew.
Slowly, he started to walk round me, and I did the same to him. I wanted anything, but him in my back. I gently lowered my head, watched him, and forced myself to grin, as I could recognize his slight injury on his hind leg, which I have inflicted to him the last time - Let's play some. With a nod I pointed to it: "Does that still hurt?" He turned his gaze once at the well-healed wound and then also grinned at me. "Like with like, I'd say, Grayish", he jumped at me, and suddenly pulled me by the shoulders with his claws getting cought, and in a twisting motion, nailed me down on the ground with his whole weight and claws beneath him. I growled and put on my ears. He bent down to me, and with his deep, throaty voice, he murmured into my ear: "May I?" In a quick movement he hauled off with a hindpaw, and slit with the claws of those along my right leg. "Aaaaaah", I yelled out loud. The sound of my own voice echoed from the burrow in my own ears, and I struggled like wild with my hind legs, kicking his belly, trying to get him off. But he was too heavy. Slowly and creepily, I noticed my warm blood trickling down my backleg, and my fur becoming wet at this place. "Ssssh", he put his one paw on my mouth, and I became silent. "This was only fair, don't you think so?" He bent down to me, and I felt his cheek slightly brushing mine. I could feel his hot breath in my ear, hearing his slow and deep breaths. He ran down my right ear with his muzzle, over my neck, and a deep, almost pleasent growl seemed to come out of his throat. "I can smell your fear, Leo, your fear for revealing something, but much more, I believe...", he lifted his head again, looking down at me with his sharp teeth unveiling, "You're fearing me, don't you?" I tried to shove him off again, pushing my front paws against his chest, but it was impossible, nor couldn't I get enough swing to haul off for another kick. He chuckled, slightly amused, as he looked down at me, watching my failed attempts to defend myself. "I like that very much", he growled at me, making my hackles rise instinctively all the way. "No one cares for your miserable existence down here, Leo. You're throwing yourself into the breach for nothing. Nobody even bothers at all, what agony you have to go through here. Better, you understand that quickly. Unless?", he interrupted briefly, lifting my chin with one of his claws, so I was forced to look into his eyes. "Your warren? Hm?" I closed my eyes for a moment, and thought. I tried to concentrate so much on what had been before I woke up on this damned meadow. But by Frith, it didn't want to come to my mind. "Not even Inlé seems to know", I breathed quietly, opening my eyes again. "It doesn't want to occur to me."

There was a moment of terrifying silence. "But the general wants to know, little Leo. Neither Inlé nor Frith. He gave me a free choice, which means I can do with you whatever I please, do you understand?", he explained almost objectively, completely neutrally, and I couldn't refuse anymore, I grew trembling in every limb again. Only now I appeared to realize how beyond all hopes this situation seemed to be - no one could help me here, no one would save me. His claws glided down to my neck and swept across my throat. "It's not enough to want the truth... you must know where to look for it~" He slightly increased the pressure and I stopped shivering for a moment, when I took fright that he'd cut my throat. But then he would not have won anything. He moved them up, over my face, past my temples, to my ear, gently rounding it at the base, and spoke in a soft, slightly lost voice, while his gaze followed his paw: "Deaf rabbit?" I closed the eyes, as I felt the panic ascending inside of me. Even the trembling has completely stopped, and I could only feel my own heart beating against my chest, how it drummed, and the blood rustling in my ears. His claws moved a little downwards, over my forehead, to my eyes. In a slow circling movement, he drove around them. "Blind rabbit?", he almost tenderly stroked over my right eye with his claws. I was freezing, so much that I even held my breath. He wouldn't, Frith, he just can't? Then he desisted, and I respired again, taking heavy and slow breaths, but keeping my eyes closed. This nightmare shall finally come to an end, but unfortunately it was reality. My whole body felt numb. Slowly, his claws continued to graze down from my eyes, along my muzzle, to my mouth. I breathed faster and faster, but kept my eyes closed. He pushed one of his claws against my lips and tried to penetrate. I immediately opened my mouth, so he just wouldn't cut me. Almost cautiosly he shoved them into my snout, and I could hear a growl with pleasure coming from him. His breast actually vibrated against the mine. "Or mute rabbit?", he murred softly, and lightly, without hurting me, I felt his claw stroking over my tongue. I didn't know why I let this all happen, but I was too afraid that with his full of sharp clawed paw on my shoulder, which still nailed me, and with the other one in my mouth, he'd just hurt me, if I'd move too jerkily.

It seemed to me like an eternity, when no word from Hawk could be heard anymore, I only felt his claw, as it stroked my tongue over and over again. He wouldn't really cut my tongue out, Frith-rah, something like that a rabbit just couldn't do to another rabbit. I couldn't any longer control myself thus, and I noticed the anxious trembling rising in me again, beginning in the nape of my neck. I carefully opened my eyes.
He stood over me, staring like fascinated at my open mouth, my tongue, or his claw? I couldn't properly identify. He appeared absentminded, with a serious look and lost in thought. Suddenly, his gaze turned slightly up, towards me. For the first time, I saw deep into his eyes, as close as never before - at least consciously. We looked into each other's eyes. They were browny, similar to his fur. They were so deep, and for a moment I could even see my reflection in them, which frightened me. I looked atrocious. They had something cold in them, I wondered how a rabbit could be suchlike brutal and callous to his equals. All of a sudden the expression in his eyes darkened in something murky, which made fear run through my veins. He pulled the claw out of my mouth, very slowly, without hurting me, and got caught on my lip for a moment, pulling it down a little, before finally taking it out of my face and holding it quietly nearby, but not setting it on the ground. His growling suddenly rang in my ears. He upheaved his paw and hit me on the left side, with his claws he ripped deep wounds on my cheek and temple. Again I screamed as before, it burned hellishly, and I struggled with might and main against his belly, but nothing helped. He grabbed my jaw making me look at him again. I felt my blood running down my cheek, flowing across his paw, and dripping to the ground. For a moment, I even thought hearing the drops hardly impacting on the ground. Expectantly he looked at me, without breathing a single word. Apparently he expected an answer, this unspeakable answer, which I was incapable of giving to him.

Bright rage was rising in me, as I clenched the teeth so tight, my jaw began to hurt. That's enough! "Drop dead!", I snarled, spitting him in his face, and struck him a blow with the right paw, which also left a slight wound on him. That seemed to baffle him, it gave me the opportunity to get some more space between our bodies, instinctively, as if I had learned it, I put both hind legs on his stomach, kicked once as hard as I could, so that he reared himself up with pain and thrusted him off over me. Immediately I rolled onto my legs, and spurted to the exit, as I heard him hitting the ground behind me. "I disappear, not even Inlé's realm can be as bad as this Efrafa", I thought. Just as I arrived at the exit, I felt a piercing pain in the back leg, which slammed me to the ground and I collapsed. "Aaaargh", I screamed, cramped, as I realized that Hawk was already sticking to me. His teeth sank firmly into my hind leg, deep into the joint. "Just be a good boy and stay here, you rotten maggot!", he cursed, dragging me back into the middle of the burrow. I was shortly before to despair, but my pride didn't allow me, I wouldn't gift that sight to him. That's it about the escape probably - Already. Brilliant.

I looked at my right hind leg, it bled heavily, and just moving it lightly caused a hell of pain already. "Have you really thought, even remotely, you could run away? You're so deep under the earth, everything is full of Owsla! You just have to be a stupid rabbit, Leo!" "You ***ed up...", I was just about to roar, as there was Hawk already standing in front of me again. Me, with my side towards him, on the ground, and he on his hind legs above me. "Shut up!", he interrupted me, and kicked into my stomach twice with full force, taking my breath away for a few moments. I rolled on my back, cramping together, and gulped for air. My heart was racing with adrenaline, with rage, being paralyzed, as he stood over me, pressing my face with a front paw aside. Still, it was difficult to breath, and I could feel his claws close under my eyelid. "You're not going anywhere so fast, little one!", he huffed, apparently angry about my previous defence against him. "I'll ask you this one last time, where is your damn warren? Who was traveling with you? HUH?", he yelled at me. "I-I just really don't know", I puffed, feeling his weight on my head. "All of this won't change anything", I said. I was just about to set my still intact back leg on his stomach, there he already interrupted me, "Don't you dare, piece of scum!" He put his hind paw right on my stomach, and pushed himself against me, so that I was unable to do anything further. I could feel the claws of his paw slightly above my belly, as they cut their way through the fur and pressed against my skin. "I'll tickle it out of you, and if it's the last, little gray buck!", with these words he sliced his claws through my skin, and I screamed out in pain, as he dragged them along and put his hind leg back on the ground. I quickly noticed how my belly felt warm and wet, and blood was lateral running down to the ground. I fearfully repeated the words like a mantra, "I don't know", so that he might stop, but instead he stopped me, silencing me by stemming his paw on my throat. I no longer got any air, and saw nothing but the wall in front of me from this angle, with his paw on my head. I opened my mouth wide to gulp for air, trying to breathe against the weight on my throat, but it didn't work. Panic-stricken, I opened my eyes wide and felt myself back, like at our first encounter. "Not again", I begged inwardly. His claws pricked strongly against the skin of my neck and I tried with my whole body to push against him, thrashing wildly, in order to get him off me, but he simply was too wheighty. All of a sudden, I noticed how my strength left me, when my heart was beating so quickly, that I thought it was just about to burst in every moment. I could hear my droning temple pulsating in my skull. Slowly it became weaker, slower, and calmer. My vision blurred slightly, it even delayed. I tried to blink, but opening my eyelids grew difficult.

Suddenly, Hawk took his paw off my throat and I could breathe in deeply. Frith, my lungs burned like never before. I frantically gasped for air, as the heart in my chest quivered faster and faster again. All muscles in my body felt slack and depleted, as if all power was needed for mere breathing, for mere staying alive. I yet noticed how he grabbed my one ear with his claws, so I was forced to look at him. I couldn't almost feel any more pain in this moment. Again and again I blinked uncontrolledly, as my field of view didn't sharpen, and I could only see blurry into his face. Merely a grin I was able to see. That bloody, sadistic grin of that buck. "All this is no fun anymore", he spat in my face, but I didn't even feel his saliva hit anymore. "Next time I'm expecting answers, otherwise you're dead, Hraffla!", he growled at me, raising my head lightly, and struck it with full force against the hard ground. Then he disappeared out of my view, everything suddenly disappeared, as it turned into the darkest black.

That was a scary chapter. Hawk really is a cruel and sadistic rabbit, and he just doesn't stop for anything. The torture scenes are well-written and you make them very realistic. It's nice to see Leo managed to inflict a few wounds on Hawk, but that didn't help him much :( The two drawings are really nice.

I'll be looking forward to the next chapter, and the turning point!

Also would it be all right if a link to this fanfic was posted on Twitter?

Thanks a lot for your comment, Chipster! Really appreaciting it! :bigwig3 I'm so glad to hear it's well-written.
Yeah, Hawk is a real monster of rabbit, the dark depths of Efrafa bring to light. I'm curious, if he ever might be liked, hrhr. :strawberry2
At least, Leo starts to fight back, really looking forward, too, if the next chapter appeals.
It's Title is: Him or me

Of course, just as for the pictures, I'd feel so honored, if my Story would be posted on the official Twitter account. o.o Thank you very much. °w° *feels flattered*

First of all the art is pretty good on Devapein's part, for a while I thought Hawk's coat was a lot of sharp teeth. :blackavar
Again it was a whole scene of Owsla brutality, but pushed to the limit. This evil rabbit is terrible in his interrogations, because it turns the meeting into something personal, beyond that it is Varvein. Therefore he does not feel any sympathy or empathy at the moment of torture to such extremes. Poor Leo, in every question and answer is treading the land of death, in that dark and deep confinement. And now I was close to dying ...
That Hawk is a damn, I prefer the cute Hawkbit. :hawkbit
Very good story, I hope you can find the gray rabbit, a light at the end of the tunnel, and this madness. :inle-movie

I feel so ashamed, I never got to answer your comment, Acacia. Thank you so, so much! I really like it, when the stories I wrote, arouse feelings and interest. :bigwig3 I hope I can maintain that level! The picture of the Black Rabbit is really well drawn!
And interesting interpretation of the picture. You're right, is coat looks like a muzzle full of teeth, never saw it that way. o.o

Anyways, here's Chapter 5! I hope you all enjoy reading it, it was quite a hard work to finish it this time, to get the feelings appropriately from German to English, which I'd like to transport. With this chapter, a new watershed begins. I so hope, it's pleasing! ^_^

Chapter 5: He or I: ShowHide

"Just like a wound I carry you
on my forehead, and it never closes.
It doesn’t hurt all time. And my heart
won’t flow out though.
Just sometimes I’m all of a sudden blind and feel
my mouth’s bleeding."
- Gottfried Benn (1913)

Nervously, I walked up and down my burrow, from one wall to the other, in this little dungeon I was still stuck in. Well, it was a hobbling, more preciously. I had no idea how many days have passed meanwhile. My sense of time has completely fallen to pieces. After the last time I woke up, only my leg was treated, the rest remained untouched. "They were probably afraid I'd bleed to death", I snarled to myself. The situation had come extremely to a crisis. The guards didn't let me out any more, as soon as I approached the exit every time, they immediately got in my way. Every now and then there were a few tufts of grass in my burrow, when I woke up, but it was not enough to satisfy my hunger. It sapped terribly on me, not full, and still weakened. My head still hurt dreadfully after the last treatment from Hawk. That smell down here compelled madness into my thoughts. I was astonished to realize, that my anxiety was diminishing rather than increasing, and was now being eroded more and more by anger. I was fed up with all this. Efrafa. Interrogations. This Hawk. Now I was going to finish him. I was making plans, things that can not happen, so he won't prevail the siuation. He was heavier than me, I was therefor a little faster. Maybe it was just a threat, that he wanted to kill me, because then they wouldn't have achieved anything with me. Perhaps he was losing his patience even so. As I did now - it was nerve-racking. Now it was: He or I.

Tensely, with pointed ears, I sat to the exit and harked in. I tried to identify steps, to see if anyone was coming. I was really deep under the earth. Not a single rabbit, except for guards, I have seen coming along since my stay. Then he appeared - almost soundless. Hawk sat himself in the exit and scrutinized me cautiously. I put on my ears and made myself ready for battle. "Good evening", his deep voice sounded. So it was evening. It was very confusing to not even know whether it was day, or night, and how many already have passed. "You withstand more than the many before you, Leo. That one have to acknowledge you. Yet this might break your neck one day." The brown buck approached, and sat down again in front of me. I didn't recede. "Or yours - Shove off! I have nothing more to say to you", I growled at him. He just shook his head. "You know the questions, Kiddo, and I won't ask them any more until you have given me the appropriate answers, have you understood me?" He said in a severe and calm voice. Much more steady than the last time. Then he grinned again, almost sadistically, "Shall we?" He rose his right paw, very quickly, but I forestalled him, struck him with my right into the face, turned around landing on my fore paws and kicked with the hind legs at full tilt, so powerful, that my joint hurt on impact. I could hear only his muffled snorting, as he hit on his back, and I again remained standing on my hind legs, watching him. Immediately, he rolled back onto his own, his eyes narrowed to slits. "Good boy, I like it when ye defend yourself more and more, chrchr", he growled, jumping towards me. I let him hit me, and tried to catch the right moment by using his vigorous fall on me, overturning with him, and pinned him on the ground. Damn, this movement came as in an everyday reaction, I was still wondering. Like trained, almost instinctively. Immediately, I held my claws to his throat, but I restrained, as I looked into his eyes. For a moment, I could've sworn to see stun in them. Could however also be pretended. "Fascinating. You must have been an Owsla, huh? The school of King El-Ahrairah, if I'm not mistaken? Very rarely encountered. And also to perfection, bravo!" "Possibly, who knows", I gave back snapping dryly. "Use the power of the enemy against him to beat him", the words bursted out of me, as if they came from a memory. I stung my claws a little more into his throat, and growled at him, "What happens if I kill you now, huh?", I asked him in earnest. He only laughed once, "Well ..." he began, "I would not recommend this to you. As soon as you leave this burrow, you're a dead rabbit, Sir Leo. The guards have the standing order to kill you, if you'll leave this hole." Damn, I cannot muddle myself through this whole warren. I clenched my teeth and thought about what I could do now, while not for a second letting him out of my sight.

"Oops...", Hawk whispered suddenly, and looked pityingly, as if I had done something wrong. Then it had happened already. I could feel his hind legs positioning on my stomach, and he catapulted me straight over. I hit the wall and slipped headlong downwards. "Aaaagh", I screamed, my darn skull was making me lose my mind, not again... I managed to roll myself over again, before he did the same and we faced each other again. For a moment, I seemed to lose the poise, and everything turned. In order to cover this, I circled in slow steps around Hawk, who did the same thing. "You just have to be more careful", he twitted me. I ignored it, when finally my vision sharpened again. Immediately I ran towards him. He stood up, and as I arrived, I threw myself heavily against him with the side, ramming him off his hind legs. Suddenly, I felt a searing pain. His claws got caught in my shoulders flesh, and he dragged me down with him to the ground. I landed near him, as everything was turning inside of me again, noticing how warm blood was running down my shoulders and forelegs, as well, as soon I was risen again. Hawk only took a swing and landed straight back on his paws. I forced myself to smile, "You really seem to enjoy this, to always land on your back, huh?" Unfazed he licked his lips. "You're bargaining away all your tricks, Leo, and after all you have no idea where it's leading you, huh?" With slow, almost silent steps, he came to me, very close, so close our muzzles were nearly touching, and in a strange way, it became uncomfortable to me. I growled instinctively.
"Booooh", he breathed in a deep, grumbling way, as he suddenly grabbed my head with both paws and slammed it to the ground. A dull crack sounded, as my snout hit a hard piece of rock in the ground. I shrieked, dreadfully holding my nose and my head alternately, tripping backwards over my own legs and landed on the soil. This damn torment, my whole snout felt numb, but the warmth of my blood I could clearly feel it, running down my flews. It was so much, when I looked down quavering. Once again, I was lying on the ground, damn, nothing worked as planned. He leisurely trotted towards me, grinning at me viciously. He seemed to enjoy this, I could clearly see. "Such a sweet sight, little three-colored rabbit, hrhr." He stopped right in front of me, lifting a foreleg, and watched his claws fascinating, whispering softly, so softly that I could hardly decipher the words, "That's something I always wanted to do." Something as cold as ice ran down my neck. Imposing and intimidating, he rose on his two hind legs, and I put on my ears fearfully. He dashed to the ground with all his strength and rammed the claws of his front legs into my paws. "AAAHH!", I bawled out. My lungs were emptying so quickly, that I got the fear of stifling on my own screaming. I could clearly feel his sharp claws scratching my naked bones. I frenziedly thrashed around with my hind legs and tried to get rid of him, but it only made it worse. Thick, viscid blood rose from the wounds, and bedewed both our paws. "Very nice~", he growled sadistically, forwardly pulling his paws away with a tearing sound. Again I screamed out, as he withal ripped out one of my claws. I startled up in pain and crashed onto my back. Tears welled up in my eyes and I sobbed, as much as I tried to suppress them. I hauled myself to the wall behind me, and shakily held my massacred paws in front of my face. Oh Frith, how that hurt, how that bled, I got so much frightened, that he was about to kill me. "W-why?" I asked, louder than I wanted, but my emotions shot out of me uncontrollably. "Why are you doing this to me? How can you-" I fell silent. He came up to me and placed one of his paws on the wall, beside my head and looked deep into my eyes. He leaned forward, whispering into my ear: "I'll tell you a secret now." I scared back, as he once licked my ear with pleasure, and my eyes opened wide. He rubbed his muzzle along my neck and growled with pleasure. "It's an exhilarating feeling, little Gray, being able to do anything to you, what comes to my mind." I anxiously put on my ears, as he went on callously, "Blood is the drink of the gods, as Frith and Inlé created us, and the awareness of drinking it, what was just now alive, is something that not many can understand." Again he came close to my ear and whispered, "I, however, understand this, and it gives me great pleasure to nourish my body with the passing life of others." I trembled all over my body - that was it.

With both of his front paws he brushed along my flanks, stopping close beneath my ribs. This frightening silence surrounding us drove me mad, hurt, no longer being able to defend myself. I didn't even dare myself, for unknown reasons. Suddenly he pierced his claws through the flesh and I gasped for breath. It felt like I've jumped through a thorn bush. Hrair tiny stabs stunning my body. Cascades of angst, desperation and anger pervaded my whole body. "Sssh!" He interrupted me with a calm voice, and I became silent. With pleasure, he led one of his paws that was soaked by my blood to his muzzle and licked it off. He closed his eyes. I watched him, and I had no idea why, but I calmed down for a tiny moment, by seeing him smile. At least that gave me the moment of rest, before he'd go on with whatever Inlé knew what. "So painfully good...," he whispered, as he opened his eyes, rubbing both of his paws through my face to wipe off the rest of the blood. Suddenly he put on his ears, almost regretfully, and I looked deep into his eyes. So did he. There was something in his gaze, but I wasn't capable of reading it. Something was not right. For a moment, my fear was blown away, and my heartbeat was barely felt. I opened my mouth to say something, albeit I didn't know what I wanted to utter at all. That he didn't have to do all of this? That he didn't need to scare me? That it availed to nothing? Maybe he just played this role. After all, he was an Owsla, and I was just a simple rabbit, picked up, to my regret, in the midst of a smoldering conflict, as it seemed to me. All at once I felt my heart beating faster, the fear was back. I swallowed hard. I suddenly felt so cold, so ineffably cold, I seemed to have lost a lot of blood. "You don't have to do this, Hawk. Anything of this." Suddenly, this cruel growl, deep from his throat. He braced himself against my throat with one of his fore paws, squeezed it, so that I struggled for air. His claws were piercing the side of my neck. Almost like a wolf his flews rose over sharp teeth and he growled at me from the deepest throat - what a change of mood. The atmosphere changed sides suddenly. He pressed his snout against mine, so I couldn't even slip away any longer, making me look deep into his eyes. Again my vision blurred slightly. I could get a little air, by tearing with both my paws at his. But suddenly, he let me space to breathe by himself, by loosening the still cruel grip. But instead of deep, I breathed slowly and calmly. It was eerie. I no longer understood my own body.

We just looked us in the eyes, and I couldn't explain how, but I deemed to see in them something that was not there before. This warmth, which emanated from them, how he looked at me, I got goosebumps. He was still growling softly and I could feel his flews vibrating vigorously against the tip of my snout. Anew the adrenaline shot into my veins, but it was of different nature. I must have gone mad, as it tempted me to loosen one of my paws from his, and to put it on his cheek to stroke with my claws through his fur. It was so soft. A queasy feeling spread inside my guts. What?!
His growling silenced the moment I let my paw rest on his cheek. I made no sign of resistance. I was tired to continue fighting. We just looked at each other. His eyes glowed like the sunset, just before the sun disappeared behind the horizon - it suddenly had something unexpectedly calming. Something nice. With time, I felt a literal thunder of my heartbeat, as it throbbed against my chest, just as I tentatively opened my mouth, and he joined me. Our lips were touching gently and he pressed them more firmly against mine. I thought the maximum of my heartbeat had long since been reached, but I was wrong. It felt so good, they were so tender, I didn't even think no more about what was going on. I tilted my head slightly to the side, and his lips embraced mine. I started to kiss him. For this very moment, my heart noticeable skipped a beat, as I couldn't refuse a pant, and he returned the kiss. Closing my eyes, I was only in the here and now. I ran with my claws through his fur, along his neck, stroking it almost tenderly, despite my inner resistance, which flared up for a moment. He replied. The Kiss - Frith in Heaven! Suddenly he intensified it, and I opened my mouth a bit further, as I sensed his tongue on mine, touching it tenderly and brushing it. I also got into it and enclosed it, caressed it, as he the mine.
Never before, this type of adrenaline shot through my head, what was happening here? Every thought flashing up for a moment was immediately devoured, and I only stayed in our kiss, I couldn't concentrate on nothing else - I didn't want to neither.

After a tangible eternity, our tongues untightened again, and we closed our lips, pressing them together for a moment. I felt his hot breath beating at mine, and it rob my mind. We were both very panting. Has he ever done this before? Have I ever done this before? I could not be in reality anymore. I started to return into my chaotic mental world, even if it was hard for me to stay clear. I opened my eyes, and saw how he opened them too at the same moment. His gaze, Frith, it had something amiable all at once. Nor could I defy myself to recognize compassion in them. Very deep. I couldn't explain what was going on here. It seemed like that there had been a spark, which now burst into a devastating inferno. I had to dream. His breathing became quicker, ostensibly he was quite churned up as well about what happened. "You ... speak true ...," he gasped softly. I did not react. How should one even react in such a situation? Suddenly he snarled in defiance again. His gaze was freezing, and he braced himself against my throat, not allowing me to breath. Immediately I reached for his paws, trying to tear them away from me, but he was too strong. "No!" He only growled, "That cannot be." His grip grew stronger, and I felt his claws piercing laterally into the flesh. "Don't~" I uttered, still choking. I struggled for air, as I had done before, thrashing around like in the snare of my dream, but it didn't take long before he blurred before my eyes, disappearing benighted in the deepest blackness. His growling merely reverberated in my ears for a moment, as I felt all strength fleeing out of my limbs.
I opened my eyes again and I was back in my burrow.
