the abridged copy is a much easier find than the unabridged.  I jumped when one day I checked and the price was $10 on amazon marketplace.

How many pages does the version you got have? If you got the most recent 2013 edition, with 272 pages, you're not missing anything. Aside from maybe a couple of sentences here and there, there's almost nothing missing from the story (that was in the original edition).

Yeah I made sure when I was looking for a copy that I went with the earliest one available...namely the first printing.  Like you said, later re-releases (namely the newer ones) were all edited so I just stayed away from all newer releases altogether.  If that new one only has 270 something pages and mine has 293 then something is different...text size and margins I assume makes a 20 page difference.

Yeah, the text in the newest one is big, and makes the story text 252 pages (excluding copyright pages and illustrations). The first print I got is 293 pages but the story doesn't start until page 8 and every illustration takes up a page and the next one is blank. I did some calculations, and I concluded that the book has at least 232 pages with text (which is smaller than the new one.) So yeah, definately text size, and less illustrations and no blank pages made a difference.
