I find it astonishing how keyboards are built for people who either want to type in English or need to for different types of websites or forums etc.

The fact that English the language of the internet is the main reason for keyboard manufacturers to do this.

I know that this as always been the case with some counties with typewriters but the way that it is now with English being the language that ties a lot of the internet together keeps English a very useful language on the keyboards.

It seems to me that most keyboard layouts (except those for languages that use non-Latin scripts) are designed in such a way that it should be easy to type in both English and the language it is designed for, like Magic says.

It's easier than having to switch layouts every time the user wants to type in another language.

The keyboard layout I use is the Canadian Multilingual Standard, which makes it easy to type in both English and French, although I hardly use French keys anymore.

I'm not entirely sure what this thread is asking? Anyway, my little thoughts on the typical keyboard, while I'm here, are that it could do with an easy access 'en-' and 'em-dash' button. And I'd like to be able to make the '1/2' symbol. I could do that once - along with other handy things, such as accents - using the numbers on the right, but no more can I do that trick. I also like the word 'qwerty'. ;D
