Favourite canon couple (books)

As far as I remember, in the original book the only couples that are canonically stated are Boxwood x Haystack and Vilthuril x Fiver.

Strawberry, as we know, lost Nildro-hain. Clover was Laurel’s doe, but she left for the Watership warren and he stayed behind; and while it may be inferred that Holly is most probably her new mate, the book never actually says so; and the possibility of Buckthorn’s being the father of Clover’s litter is never definitely ruled out.
The SEQUEL book tells us Hyzanthlay becomes Hazel’s mate and co-chief rabbit- as well as confirming the hunch about Holly and Clover.

But honestly I am reluctant to consider TFWD as canon; I do not find it nearly so engaging as the first book.

I agree that TFWD isn't as good as the original book, and I have mixed feelings about it.

I like some parts of it, mainly "Hyzenthlay in Action" and Flyairth, but many El-ahrairah stories really disappointed me, and the entire idea behind Stonecrop seems flawed.

Well— Laurel and Clover are described as a matched set- two of a kind. They are both short-haired black Angoras, just as Boxwood and Haystack are both black-and-white Himalayans. And the other two hutch rabbits were “together”, so that doesn’t leave either of them with too many other options. My guess is the book doesn’t really emphasize their coupledom strongly since Clover moves on and forms other attachments.

You make some valid points.  I had forgotten how Clover and Laurel were of the same breed (probably because she wasn't depicted as a black Angora in either the film or the TV series).

One thing I wonder though...why didn't the four Nuthanger Farm rabbits have kittens before they were freed?

Anyway to get back to the original question of ‘ships...

As I was saying, there don’t seem to be many canon couples, nor really any that we really get to SEE together as a couple. Even Fiver and Vilthuril we never actually see interacting.

Myself, I personally favor a ‘ship that has no official canon authorization; I like Hyzanthlay x Bigwig: whereas the sequel has her together with Hazel; and I can see why it makes sense, but I find her and Bigwig’s friendship one I wish to see continued. Besides, one of her litter is described as being particularly strong, and having to be taught not to bully (who does that remind you of?); AND Holly comments that he hopes they get more like this bunch- which makes me think of Hazel’s telling Bigwig that they’re relying on him to produce the warren a really good Owsla (-even Kehaar says he’s looking forward to coming back and frightening all the little Bigwigs away).

As I mentioned to you once before elsewhere, I would like to see a bit more development of Thethuthinnang’s character, and have *her* perhaps ship with Hazel.

It's interesting how, excluding mythological couples, Bigwig/Thethuthinnang is the only couple to have 0 votes.  I guess that makes sense, since Bigwig isn't very romantic

Acacia is probably talking about a character called Primrose in the TV series.  She replaces Hyzenthlay and all the other Efrafan does, and mates with Hazel.

I like the idea of book-Hazel having a daughter by that name though Did you create names for his other kittens?

I voted for and Hazel and Fiver and Vilthuril. It's nice that sweet li'l Fiver found a mate. I was getting Vilthuril confused with Thethinguncan'tspellname... the latter could also see things rather like Fiver, right? She was interesting, but I didn't remember that she became mates with Bigwig.

I think it was only mentioned in Tales from Watership Down.  However, it's been a while since I last read it, so I could be wrong...

Thethuthinnang shows up in the miniseries; it's going to be interesting to see how they handle her.
