Wasted potential

Thinking of a different series than Spyro now but it's also a shame when the least popular entry had some great ideas and those get tossed out with everything else when the next game rolls around.

Sonic 06 in a nutshell. Such an ambitious title with great ideas botched because there just wasn't enough time.

And now Sonic Team and Sega are terrified of ambition. And continue to rush games for the holidays like morons.

Play it safe, minimum costs, mediocre income. Truly a pity.

Cashing in on the fact that your biggest brand is a laughing stock. Yay.

I think some older mascot characters are happy now they died out before that could happen to them!

Ha, probably. You dodged a bullet, Ristar. But not you, Bubsy.

You ever play Bubsy Visits the Art Gallery? The title is longer than that actually, but you get the idea.

It's interesting to compare to now where companies can get fairly instant feedback from their fan bases to the days even in Sonic 06/EtD times how or when they try to recover.

It's not like when those games were released they could just release a patch when glitches are discovered like in Super Smash Ultimate, or redact unpopular content, like loot boxes in Star Wars Battlefront.

And still some companies do put out unpopular content, like the continuation of poor mechanics in later Paper Marios, even after they were universally panned by the fans.

It's weird how both listening to feedback and not listening to feedback can create problems.

Sega seems to listen way too much while Nintendo just does whatever it wants.

It's the universal artist dilemma of pandering to the fans vs. doing what you want to do. I'm sure Kingcup would have felt the same.

There's plenty of potential for Paper Mario as it was initially, but Lord Shiggy says, "No. No characters, all Toads."

From the Let's Plays I've watched of Color Splash, they do manage to still write some pretty witty dialogue.  Though I agree, NPC variety is king, and I really miss that.

Well, that's just the thing. The Toads are obviously individuals but they're all designed completely the same. Why?
