The Hlessil

Nildro-roo lolloped along the stream, pausing only to silflay or to scratch herself with her hind leg. This was her sixth month out of the Warren of the Shining Wire, and she had become quite used to the solitude; in fact, she had begun to enjoy it. She suddenly halted, turning her head this way and that. moving forward a couple paces, she found the thing for which she had been searching: a single dandelion, the first one of spring.
It had been a hard winter, but Nildro could dig well, and she was relieved to have survived to witness her first spring without her warren. Twitching her nose, she slowly nibbled the dandelion, wondering when she would be able to find a home.
A small homba poked its head out of the surrounding shrubbery. Abandoning her dandelion, Nildro-roo scampered to her scrape and huddled nervously in the muddy, recently dug walls of the temporary burrow as she waited for the fox to pass.

OOC: Could I join?  Do I just have to create a character and hop in?

OoC: Of course!

IC: Finally poking her head out from the safety of the scrape, Nildro-roo twitched her nose impulsively. The homba was indeed gone, but there was a faint trace of something else in the wind. She lifted her front quarters out of the hole and sniffed the air. Rabbit! There was another in her vicinity! Could it be a hlessi like herself?
"He-hello?" Nildro glanced nervously at her surroundings. "Frithraes, friend. I mean you no harm."

Nettle had also smelled the homba, and was hiding in a nearby bush, when she suddenly heard a voice.  This was clearly not the homba talking, but she nevertheless remained suspicious.

She slowly got out of her hiding spot and looked around her, trying to pinpoint the location of whoever had talked to her.  She finally saw Nildro-roo, peeking out of her scrape.

“Frithraes" she said, as she slowly approached her. "Are you alone?"

Nildro sighed with relief at the friendly doe.
"Yes, my warren became too dangerous for me. And you? My name is Nildro-roo, by the way." Nildro suddenly became tense, remembering the fox and its rapid departure. "It isn't safe here. This is elil country. I have a scrape we can share, if that's all right with you."
Nildro nodded her head slightly, indicating where it was.

"I'm Nettle, and I'm a hlessi too.  My old warren wasn't exactly dangerous, but nothing exciting ever happened," Nettle said.

She looked at the scrape.  It was rather small, but hopefully they would both be able to fit.

"You're right about elil," she continued.  "I've smelled many over the past few days.  Luckily I haven't encountered any, but it may be a good idea to leave this area, before anything happens."

Nildro watched as Nettle dove into the hole, then sniffing around one last time, she followed suit. "I was planning on moving fu-Inle, to get to a safer territory. Care to join me? I wanted to see if we could find some more hlessil to maybe start another warren."

"If you want me, I would be glad to join you on your journey," Nettle said. "Life is always more exciting as a group."

She looked outside.  Judging by Frith's position in the sky, it was mid-afternoon.

"If you're feeling tired, you can take a nap, and I'll keep a lookout."

Nildro smiled tiredly. "Yeah, that would be great." Now snugly in her burrow, she closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep.

In her dreams, she drifted off to the months of her life spent in the Warren of the Shining Wire. She saw her brother, Elil-ela, a few hops in front of her.

"C'mon, Birdie! Hurry up!" His white tail bounced up and down in the grass.

"I'm hurrying, I'm hurrying," Nildro laughed, trying to keep up with him.

They rounded a yew tree and landed in a pile of leaves. Rolling around playfully, the two young rabbits were blissfully ignorant of the dark secret of their warren.

In her dream, Nildro suddenly saw her brother dig into the autumn leaves. "Stop! What are you doing?" she cried.

"I'm just digging. I think there's something shiny down there..." Elil-ela dug his nose deper into the pile.

"No! No!" Nildro screamed, and tried to pry him out. He shoved her off and continued digging. Again she tried to stop him, but then it was too late. Ensnared in the wire, Elil-ela thrashed about, calling Nildro's name and begging her for help. The image blurred and faded to the sound of his pleas.

Nildro-roo awoke with a start. The dream had become a common thing in the past months, but it frightened her every time.

"Hey, Nettle, I think it's time for my watch."

Nettle turned her head to look at Nildro-roo.

"You're a sound sleeper," she said. "I was beginning to think you were going to sleep all afternoon."

She stepped down from her spot at the burrow's entrance, and noticed something unusual on Nildro's face.

"Are you all right?  You don't look rested.  In fact, you seem a little scared."

"I-I'm fine," Nildro stammered. "Just a bad dream."

She turned away from Nettle's stare, feeling embarrassed. She felt her friend's gaze, and she turned back towards her.

"If you're not too tired, let's leave this Frith-forsaken meadow, shall we?"

Nettle remained slightly worried about Nildro, but accepted her explanation and did not press the issue any further.

"All right, I'm ready.  And if we leave now, we might be able to leave the night elil."

She hopped out of the scrape and smelled the air.  There were no smells of elil, other than the faint traces of the fox they had encountered previously.  She paused, waiting for Nildro to follow her.

Nildro lingered in the scrape for a little while longer, then scampered after Nettle. The journey was underway.

After passing trees, hedges, and shrubberies, Frith was finally on the horrizon. Nildro paused as the glow of the sunset cast shadows from the trees. One of the shadows moved, almost inconspicuously.

"Nettle?" she asked, nervously. "Did you see that?"
