Story of Darzin's Lettuce was to be in the film.
« on: August 22, 2011, 12:48:42 AM »
Yep, there is a piece of the movie that was cut before theatrical release where Dandelion I assume, tells the rabbits of Cowslip's warren about the story of El-ahrairah and Darzin.  This isn't in the film, but it was in the film up until at the very least the last few months of production.

How do I know it was there?

http://www.angelamorley.com/site/wd-cue3.htm

Check out the cue sheet...basically a list of all the cues in the film.  They all have to be there for copyright purposes by law.  The first one on this page is Darzin's lettuce story, approximately 3:30 long of continuous music.  Angela Morley was brought on as composer very late in the film, so this scene was definitely done in pencil sketches, if not full animated form before it was cut.

Why cut?  Morley said it had to do with pacing and the story slowed it down, so it had to be cut.

Any pictures of this deleted scene? Unfortunately, not that I've come across, though they definitely had to exist for Morley to make an appropriate score for the scene.  So, here it is, as far as I'm aware...Watership's only deleted scene.

Awwwww darn! I would have loved to see that animated!

I can see why they had to cut it though. Maybe it will be in the new mini series.

Thought I knew everything about the movie, but i guess i was wrong.
That's a bummer. I wish they had it on the movie or at least had a cut with this scene on a DVD. Do you know if the ani.ation for the scene was completed?

I would vote King Darzin.  The design, with the stars on the ears, would fit the king rather well, I think (while Richard Adams said that King Darzin is supposed to be a beaver, this information was most likely not available to Martin Rosen or anyone else).

Also, I wouldn't have been surprised if Rabscuttle had been erased from existence in the 1978 film like many other minor characters.  Perhaps Prince Rainbow was also deleted, considering that's Frith in the background.

It would be nice if the full scene were to be released eventually, but I wouldn't get my hopes up.  The Criterion Blu-Ray featured extensive storyboards but this animated scene was not included, nor on any other VHS or DVD release.  Perhaps the storyboard includes additional sketches from the scene though; I'll have to take a look.

I'm unfortunately not very familiar with cels. Yeah? Guess, if it would have a Disney label on, it could be more than 1k? Hah. x)

Oh, if it's from a variety of sources, it can be well over 1k. I believe a Flintstone's Winston cigarettes commercial cel was being sold for more than 10k. Spongebob Season 1 and Family Guy season 1 cels can also go for an arm and a leg.

O_O

Still, compared to what other WD cels sold for in the past, this one is expensive.

Oh, yeah, but then, it's also of a lost scene, which just pushes things even more.

Woah I never knew this.

I wish I could see the full scene with King's lettuce someday.

But ya.. I want to buy a Bigwig one. Until I become rich I will just draw my own art of Bigwig.
