How do they choose a new Chief Rabbit?
« on: January 10, 2018, 01:14:16 AM »
I'm not sure if it's been said in any of the canon material (if it is, I've missed it) but how do the rabbits choose a new chief? Is there a sort of hierarchy?

This is an interesting question...

As far as I remember there is no canon information on the subject, other than possibly when Hyzenthlay became co-Chief in TFWD.  If I remember correctly, Hazel suggested it, Hyz approved, and nobody objected, so it happened.

But after Hazel's death, I don't know what would happen...maybe he would choose a successor some time before?

Other warrens might have other ways of doing things, though.

Very interesting question... I never thought about it :P

I guess that's one of those things that are designed to be there without being questioned. Too bad, that actually raises a lot of questions.

I know the answer. A chief rabbit is supposed to be chosen, because he is strong, he is wise, he cares about his burrow and all his rabbits. Take care of them, protect them from the dangers, know what to do in many situations: For that reason they are given the nickname of threat. Like Hazel-Rah, despite the fact that Bigwig is stronger and more capable, Hazel is the one who has the highest judgment when it comes to taking difficult decisions and taking his rabbits to the best path for their survival. On the other hand rabbits like Woundwort take control by force, power and intimidation. Cowslip by means of empty promises and illusions of a better life ... In Dark Haven the strong sea predominates. And I suppose that in more friendly rabbit hutches like that of the mansion in the Christmas special, the most capable one is chosen.    :blackavar

Those are all very strong theories and are probably correct lmao

Personally, I'd like to think that the current chief picks out a handful of successors and some well-respected rabbits decides who it'll be :D

I wish this was answered in canon, though. it would've made it a lot easier
