Maybe it quickly indicates what kind of character they are. Hazel's the calm leader, Fiver's the meek one, Bigwig's the brash one, the TV versions of Hawkbit and Dandelion sound like the comic relief. Kehaar sounds like the cliche goofy foreigner, though the Scottish accent in the miniseries sounds so close to his Russian accent elsewhere I just accepted it was the same character. I thank the similar voices for helping me to keep track of who's who in the miniseries.
Blackberry bucks that trend, his or her voice is pretty normal so it doesn't say anything about who he is.

I am quite fond of the BBC radio play's version of Hazel though, sounds a lot like Simon Pegg which I think is wrong for his character but too entertaining and lively to dismiss.
