Yes, I know this has probably been asked a thousand times, but how come Blackberry is a buck in the book and a doe in the TV series? I mean, it does pretty much shape the third season, but from what I got is that the original makers planned to leave it off at season 2 and it was revived in season 3. Anyway, I am wondering why they did that.

IIRC, they wanted to make the series more attractive for girls, so they changed her gender to have a strong, female character who shows the bucks the way the cookie crumbles.

Simply put the creators of the series bent the storyline into a more "child friendly" one rather then the having the series storytelling and development like the book. The book is worded and spun with a more adult mindset in mind and the series creators felt it would be to much for younger viewers to understand.

The book rabbits act more like actual wild rabbits while the series do not. So they felt adding in a female character in the a main role would be better to attract the female demographic.

Exactly, that is the answer. Especially because the group should have more variety in their group and not just male rabbits.    :primrose   :pipkin-oh :hawkbit2        :blackberry3

Adding one girl character makes them not look sexist I guess. Even though one of the main problems in the watership down  book is that there was no does, so that defeats the purpose of the issue.

Going by The wiki The reason  why blackberry was female it's because of the lack of female rabbits in the novel .
