Watership Down new movie in the future
« on: June 01, 2015, 10:04:14 AM »
I was wondering...what if someone decided to make Watership Down as a fully CGI animated movie? I mean, there are a lot of remakes of old TV and cartoon serials, so why not make one for Watership Down, too? :-)
So, what do you guys think? Would that be a good or a bad idea? (Personally, I think it would be an AWESOME idea, but I want to hear other oppinions.)

I don't know about the movie, but it appears there is a CGI animated tv series in the making. :) Here is discussion topic about it:

Wow, really? Thank you for the link Myrkin, those are great news! I really hope the new TV series will be as good as the first ones. :-)
But I would really like if they would make a movie in the future, too. (Although, I wouldn't want it to be a remake of the movie from 1978. I was really scared of that movie as a child ><). I can just imagine Hazel and his gang made in CGI technology! :-)

I don't want everything being recreated in CGI, personally. I think the coming series will be enough anyway, not to consider another film. Not for some decades, at least.

I can't see myself 'warming' to CGI rabbits as much as the 2D versions. But we'll see what they do - I could be much surprised.

It depends on what CGI-style they will use. References on other sites are pointing to a realistic look. I would prefer this.

By the way just some thoughts, that probably will never be realized:

Do you know Disney's Dinosaur? They used a live-action environment and put computer-animated dinosaurs into it. What do you think, when the creators would use the real Watership Down as location and put computer-animated animals into it.

When it comes to a WSD movie remake, I'm rather impartial on it.

On one hand, it's the gamble of giving a greedy studio the rights to WSD, because there's always the chance they'll dumb it down, cull the violence and re-write it to be completely politically correct. The final result will be a hideously twee and uninspired tale of some rabbits mass marketed towards hyperactive children.

That said, I'm not totally blinded by pessimism and I know it's also a possibility that a studio could remake it, faithful to the book, while also adding a whole new dimension of depth through the stunning realism of hollywood CGI.

Could you imagine what proper CGI could do for, say, Fiver's vision? The sky blackened out to an oppressive void, the landscape burning crimson with blood? Or a brilliantly abstract retelling of the tales of El-arairah?

Perhaps a WSD movie is a bit far-fetched, but the 2016 television series is a reality and I have high hopes that it's faithful to the essence of the book - something the 1999 TV series managed to accomplish and also build on.
