All this ruckus brought out a big groan out of lungs of wild hare living in the form at the bottom of the hill. She covered her ears with forepaws in vain attempt to block the noise, but no matter how much she tried the rabbit’s voice couldn’t be ignored. Finally, she gave up and rose from her ground nest.
“How is it possible that such a small creature can make so much noise?” she asked equally in astonishment and irritation. She prided herself in her ability to hear a fox sneaking while she was asleep, but right now that was more of a curse than a blessing as the yelling from above continued. Luiki. Of course. Who else would welcome the morning in this manner? Ranger almost prayed that some predator would come and take that annoying rabbit. Wouldn’t that be a win for everybody?
She sighed. “I better go up there and silence him before he does attract a hunter,” she muttered to herself. Life was simpler and more peaceful before she met the rabbits of Watership Down. Then again, it would have been shorter, if they didn’t found her after she had been shot by farmer. That event had left a mark on her hind leg, one that she would have to carry to the end of her days. She could still run, so there was some silver lining.
She climbed swiftly up the slope. With each jump, the screams grew louder, if such thing was even possible. This was starting to put some strain on her ears. She needed to put a stop to this and soon.
Ranger reached the top of the Down and run to entrance to the warren. Luiki was too busy hollering down the hole to notice her. That gave her an idea on how to get back at him for waking her from sweet dreams. Not stopping, she slammed her body against Luiki’s rump, sending him into the Honeycomb...
