Ok, can someone PLEASE explain me what went wrong in order to make one of the best characters in the book look AND feel so... dispensable? :blackavar

Right from the start we have the problem that he's not hurt in the series (not visibly, anyway) and while I can certainly understand WHY (YOU try to get away with having a mutilated character walking around the burrows AND having it happening on-screen in a kids' show) that takes a lot of personality and attractiveness from the character and leaves him feeling like an empty shell.

But it's not only that, he's completely stripped of ALL of his distinctive character traits as well. I haven't reached the point in the series where he's more than an escapee from Efrafa, but I don't think he ever becomes anything more than that. We don't get to see his usefulness as a great runner and expert tracer either. He's sadly given the "Broom" treatment and is only there to have more recognizable characters as a result. What a shame.

His voice-acting seems a little off as well, although I can't put my finger on the problem either. He does speak far more casually than everyone else, though. And... is he on Season 3? I don't think he is. What happened?

So much wasted potential.

The idea to judge him to death for fleeing is not bad at all (and really does compensate the fact, that he's unwounded in the series). That Primrose (and Kehaar) prevent this fate is also good.

BUT: He's totally a sissy in the series. And his voice acting is terrible. I mean, I really love Stephen Gately's version of Bright Eyes (probably the only good song, he ever sang), but as a voice actor, he's awful.

So it's really no shame he was written out of the series (but I still think, I've seen him in the third season helping to build the defense against Darkhaven).

But, Blackavar's escape disembogues into an amazing introduction of General Woundwort. That shouldn't be forgotten. Simply when he spoke "The justice ... is death!" - just amazing.

But if that's gonna be his highlight, we are in trouble.

Mmm, you might be right about that. I think he was among the background characters who helped with the defense of Watership Down (not for more than a few frames, though).

I agree, but that doesn't change the fact that Woundwort is amazing and Blackavar isn't. Seriously, I LOVED that guy. What the heck, guys?

I agree with Darkling that his introduction is rather good, but after that...well, he doesn't do anything useful.  He is loud and it's a wonder nobody heard him talking about the escape plan.  And after the escape from Efrafa, he doesn't get a single line.  He can be seen on occasion, generally during meetings, but never does anything useful.

Another thing I found annoying is that he isn't even black.  There was a reason why he was called Blackavar in the book.

Am I the only one who thinks he was killed during the battle in the caverns?  He isn't seen or mentionned afterwards, as far as I know, and just before the battle, Hazel told Bigwig (?) to get a few rabbits, him included.

No, he didn't die in the caverns. He can be seen in the third season (for a very short time - I still need to get a screenshot for my site).

If you remember in which episode, I can take it right now :)

I know, right? His brownish design simply doesn't cut it.

I still think, it was in the last episode, but I couldn't spot him.

Maybe, they should have renamed him from Blackavar to Brownie :p

Might be the one pushing the rock, Darkling?

It doesn't seem like Hickory (who was my first guess).

This happened on the episode "The beginning of the end".

I think your first guess was correct. :)

I'm pretty sure, this is Hickory.

Holly is looking like he's thinking "What the shadowland are you guys doing?" :D

And who's with them, also pushing the boulder? I don't get why would they re-color Hickory when they could easily use him. It's not like if he was dead or something.

I think that's Hickory.  I recognize that piece of white fur on his head.

As for the blue guy, I think he can be seen among the Efrafan survivors in episode 28.

Haha, yeah, Blackavar wasn't even black. Silliness!

Stephen (RIP :( ) , sorry to agree was not a good voice actor here. The character was pretty flat, the boyband hair was silly, and he probably needed to be ruffled up a bit! Too smooth.
Here lies a signature that has little point.

But luckily, we have enough great characters in the series to veneer this character-misdetermination. :woundwort

I'm losing it here, that particular detail was what killed the character before my very eyes.
